settlers arrived from Ireland in the 1820s.
Two of
the first
settlers in the area were Marcus Swift and John Lathers. Mr. Swift
arrived
in the area in 1825. With the coming of the horseless carriage and the
wages offered by Henry Ford, the community of Garden City began to
develop
and expand. Farms were separated to created home sites in the early
1920s,
water was brought to Garden City in the late 1920s and electricity came
soon after in the early 1930's.
The first postmaster for the Garden City
area was Glenn O. Donner. The Garden City Hospital was built first as a
maternity hospital and now serves the community in a variety of ways,
including
a rehabilitation unit.
The Garden City Library began in 1923, in the home of
Elizabeth Kubic. After residing in several different
locations, a library was built at 2012 Middlebelt Road, dedicated in
1954, expanded
in 1963, and renovated in 1998. In the summer of 2006, the library was
moved into
the Maplewood Community Center.
The area was incorporated into a village in 1927 with
only 900
residents.
Six years later, in 1933, it was incorporated into a city with the
population
almost triple of what it was in 1927, with 2500 residents. By 1990,
Garden
City's population reached 31,846. Garden City's population,
according to the 2000 census, is 30,047.
